Renewable Energy

Taking Over

ANALYSIS BY: DAN DONATO

The UN Environment programme and Bloomberg New Energy Finance published a fantastic report on global trends in renewable energy.

An interesting finding from the report is that for every new gigawatt of power capacity added during the past two years, the majority is being generated from clean sources. In fact, renewables accounted for 55.3% of new capacity added in 2016, an all-time record share. This comes despite a sharp drop in new investment year-over-year. Falling investment isn't a bad story, as it's largely driven by greater efficiencies (declining capital costs of renewable energy projects).

Notes to the chart: New investment volume adjusts for re-invested equity and total values include estimates for undisclosed deals.
